There's Research on That: Translating and Sharing Sociology for Public Audiences

This article draws a decade of experience editing and publishing TheSocietyPages.org, four more years Contexts magazine. Both projects work to bring sociological research insight broader public audiences, visibility, impact. Here we build upon Herbert Gans' original call for sociology his emphasis on the translation dissemination research, insight, context social issues problems broad audiences. We begin by detailing general challenges such communication-oriented outreach engagement. then use our with The Society Pages, one largest hubs internet, as case study doing this addressing these challenges. Key points include: (1) core key principles writing general, nonacademic audiences; (2) organizational infrastructure-related needs some pragmatic recommendations institutionalizing publicly engaged sociology; (3) critical role graduate students in endeavors. conclude that sociologists ourselves are best positioned share audiences identify benefits discipline scholarship over sustained period.
